Sunday afternoon we flew to Zhengzhou and checked into our super-swanky hotel room at the Hilton. On one hand it is really nice to be in such a luxurious place, since so much about this week is going to be hard. But on the other hand, it’s almost embarrassing. We are on the 39th floor, and from the stairwell, we can see a squatters’ village just a few blocks away. The breakfast buffet is amazing, but there is hardly anyone there, and I have to wonder how much of this food they are just going to throw away, while people are starving down the street.
People here do not speak English. That has been the biggest surprise to
me. Even our hotel staff! Even the workers at KFC! It is extremely smoggy here, the streets are
very crowded and difficult to pass, and our guide is only with us for part of
the day, so I do suspect we will be spending LOTS of time at the indoor pool
and in our room this week.
